Following Alty’s 2-2 opening day draw at The J. Davidson Stadium against Leamington, they make the trip west to face Southport at the Merseyrail Community Stadium on Tuesday night with a 19:45 kick off.

Phil Parkinson was happy with the character shown by his team on Saturday, and especially with the performance in the second half where the Robins raised the intensity levels and fought back twice from deficits.

Poole and Densmore remain on the sidelines for this match but Phil will hope to count on defenders Hannigan and Harrison after knocks.

Southport’s season started with a disappointing defeat at Telford in a match where the Sandgrounders’ boss Liam Watson admitted his side were second best.

That result was a stark contrast to their form in pre-season as they picked up a number of good results including a 3-1 win over Bury, a 1-1 draw with Accrington, and 3-0 victories over Barrow, Witton and Widnes.

Watson will be expecting a response from his players for this home opener for which there should be a good attendance. Despite the opening day loss, they have plenty of quality in their squad including summer signing Mike Phenix who joined from Salford for an undisclosed fee as he joins last season's NLN Golden Boot winner Jason Gilchrist in attack.

Against Telford they lined up in a 4-3-3 formation:

Hanford, Richards, Langley, Astles, Priestley, Lowe, Osborne (Morgan 59), Lynch, Phenix (Gilchrist 71), Sampson, Green (Charles 59).

Subs not used: Mueller, Winnard.

How to get there:

Directions from The J. Davidson can be found here while the address for your sat nav is Merseyrail Community Stadium, Haig Avenue, Southport, Lancashire, PR8 6JZ

There was one previous Alty match played on August 7th and that was a Peter Swales Memorial Trophy match in 1999 between Altrincham and Stalybridge Celtic which the Robins won 2-0. This tradition saw the NPL Champions face the Cup-winners and became something of a curtain-raiser for the season, hence being played one week before the league season began.

A moment of magic from John Johnston helped Alty take all three points from their trip to Southport and pick up their first win of the season. Tied at 1-1, Johnston picked up a cross-field pass, cut inside and curled a superb effort with the outside of his right foot into the corner to put Alty back ahead.

That proved to be a decisive moment at a time when Southport were enjoying their only real spell of dominance in the ten minutes after they had equalised. Jordan Hulme added a third with a classic poacher’s goal and Alty expertly controlled the game to the final whistle.

The first half saw the Robins control possession for long spells, but there were few clear cut chances of note. The best opportunity came from a long range effort from Jordan Hulme which Southport keeper Daniel Hanford tipped over the bar. For all the match often flowed end to end, there were not too many alarming moments for either goalkeeper, despite Alty having more of the ball.

Similar to Saturday, Phil Parkinson’s men came out with of the traps with greater purpose and it was a well worked free kick which led to the opening goal. Johnston fed the ball into Daniels who had run over the ball, and his deflected effort was well saved by Hanford who was diving the wrong way, but Goulding was on hand to slide the rebound home and open his account for Alty.

On 57 minutes, Southport hit back. A dubious free kick was awarded on the edge of the area which allowed Jordan Richards to step up and curl a lovely effort past Tony Thompson.

That equaliser then saw Southport enjoy their best spell of the game and they came close to taking the lead. A corner was whipped over from the left and the goal-bound header was blocked on the line by Sean Williams.

Fresh legs were added on 63 minutes as Richman and Hancock came on for Daniels and Harrop, and it was Hancock who was involved in what proved to be the decisive goal. His run across the field and pass to Johnston set the Alty winger in motion before producing the moment of the match with his beautiful curling effort.

Jordan Hulme was not to be thwarted and he continued his hot goalscoring streak by scoring his third goal in the opening two matches to put the match to bed on 76 minutes. That third goal settled Alty down and they looked well in control of the game after that with the hosts a little deflated.

Tempers flared a little with a couple of late bookings for Hulme and Southport’s Morgan, but Alty ran out deserved winners in the end after an excellent all-round performance.

Attentions now turn to Spennymoor on Saturday, with our opponents following up their draw at Chester on the opening day with another draw at home to local rival Darlington.

Alty pick up an excellent 3-1 win in Southport thanks to goals by Liam Goulding, John Johnston and Jordan Hulme. The opening half saw Alty edge possession with the game going back and forth but without too many clear cut chances. The deadlock was broken on 50 minutes through Liam Goulding who scored his first goal for the club, but that lead was short lived as Southport hit back minutes later. The game was in the balance for the opening hour of the game but a moment of magic from JJ saw Alty go back ahead at a time when Southport had equalised and were in the ascendancy. Jordan Hulme then added a third and Alty took control and expertly saw the game out to give Phi Parkinson’s men three points.

This game is livening up now as JJ floats a cross from the right which Southport keeper Hanford pushes it out, while the ball immediately returns to the attacking third and Jordan Hulme flashes a superb 25-yard effort which the keeper pushes over the bar
The ball immediately switches to the other end as Phenix crosses from the right and skipper David Lynch side foots an effort wide of Thompson's post
Just as we write that Connor Hampsin gets on to an overhit cross by Johnston, he shoots with his right foot after cutting inside and Max Harrop's effort is blocked just on the edge of the six yard box. It remains goalless.
