The Robins cruised to a second victory on the bounce after a superb second half display. John Johnston won the man of the match award, claiming two goals and an assist, including a remarkable finish from what seemed an impossible angle.
The game started fairly evenly with neither team creating any clear-cut chances. Tony Thompson received what would be his only real test of the game, palming away Russel Benjamin’s long range blast. Alty were forced into two early changes as Sean Williams (foot injury) and Andy White (feeling ill) were replaced by Simon Richman & Connor Hampson, but this didn’t affect their performance as they soon began to dominate.
A brilliant move between Hulme and Hancock ended in the number 10’s rocket of a shot being well-saved by Southport keeper Charlie Albinson. The Robins came close soon after- Jack Doyle making a vital goal line clearance to deny Josh Hancock.
Albinson continued to frustrate the thriving Robins. He flew across his line to push Simon Richman’s ambitious effort over the bar. He was called into action again late in the first half, this time diving down quickly to stop Johnstone’s low driven effort.
However, he was powerless to stop Alty’s stunning second half push, started early by a beautiful goal from John Johnston from a very difficult angle.
Hulme picked out a great pass to send the winger through. He cut inside, darted to the by-line before pulling back and bending the ball perfectly into the top corner.
Phil Parkinson’s men continued to dominate the match & the second goal came in the 70th minute. Hancock won the ball on the edge of his own area from a rare venture forward by the visitors and played the ball to Johnston. A great through ball returned to Hancock, who had run more than 60 yards & he slotted a left foot shot past the keeper into the bottom corner from 15 yards.
Four minutes later, it was three. Jordan Hulme won the ball deep in the Southport third. He squared the ball to John Johnston who kept his cool, took his time, and finished smartly from 10 yards with a left foot effort.
Southport had very little to offer in response, hoofing ambitious balls forward that rarely ended in a chance.
The game ended 3-0 to Alty, which takes Phil Parkinson’s men 3 places up the table into 14th.
Altrincham's next game and their first of 2020 will be against Curzon Ashton at The J.Davidson Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
