Phil Parkinson will be looking for a positive reaction from his Altrincham side this Tuesday as they welcome Woking to the J. Davidson Stadium.

After suffering their fourth loss on the bounce against Chesterfield, things went from bad to worse for Alty as they fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Bromley, who had defender Chris Bush sent off late in the game.

In that defeat to Bromley, National League top scorer Michael Cheek had handed the Ravens the lead after five minutes, as the Robins’ poor run of form looked set to continue.

Despite the early setback, Parkinson’s side soon found themselves level, as Jake Moult’s strike in the 36th minute handed Alty a lifeline.

However, only two minutes later, former Billericay Town defender Joe Kizzi caught the Robins’ napping to restore the hosts’ lead, after heading a deeply swung corner in at the far post.

The game was soon taken out of Altrincham’s hands before the half time break, after the referee awarded Bromley a penalty for a push inside the box. Cheek stepped up to convert the spot kick, handing the hosts a 3-1 lead.

You can watch highlights of our 3-1 defeat to Bromley by pressing play below.

Following this defeat, Altrincham slip further down the Vanarama National League table, falling one more place to 11th, four points away from the final play-off spot, currently occupied by Notts County, having played five more games than the Magpies.

With the Robins’ last victory coming against Torquay United on February 2, 2021, any hopes of Altrincham securing a play-off place rest on the team turning their form around. However, after ending their own winless run at the weekend, Woking will be looking at Tuesday evening’s game as an opportunity to put together a good run of form of their own.

After an impressive start to the season, which saw our opponents win their opening two league games against Solihull Moors and Weymouth, Woking have been inconsistent since and have found themselves flirting with those teams nearer the bottom of the league. Having completed 21 games this season, the Cardinals have seven victories, five draws, and nine losses, scoring 25 but conceding 26 for a goal difference of -1.

Despite their position in the league table, Woking have shown that they have what it takes to match the best sides in this division, beating the likes of Torquay United, Sutton United, Maidenhead United, and Hartlepool United. On top of that, taking the 4-1 loss to Stockport out of the equation, the Cardinals have not conceded more than two goals in any game since December 28.

In their last outing against league leaders Torquay United, this time in the quarter final of the FA Trophy, Jamar Liza’s strike in the 37th minute of the game proved to be enough to take Woking to within one step of a Wembley final. Before that game, the Cardinals secured a 2-0 away league win against struggling Barnet. Loza once again was among the goals, scoring in the 28th minute, before Moussa Diarra doubled their lead with 20 minutes to play.

Tuesday evening’s matchup will be the first meeting between Altrincham and Woking this season. The last time both sides faced one another came on January 26, 2016, when strikes from Michael Rankine, Josh Ginnelly, and Jonny Margetts secured Alty an impressive 3-1 win, with Woking’s goal coming from Giuseppe Sole.

You can watch highlights of that 3-1 win by pressing play below.

Our opponents this week are managed by Alan Dowson, who became the Cardinals manager in May 2018, following four years in charge of NL South side Hampton & Richmond Borough. He replaced Anthony Limbrick, who was relieved of his duties after just 11 months into a three-year contract, after Woking were dragged into a relegation battle.

An academy prospect at Millwall, Dowson gained experience as a professional football at Bradford City, all before going on to enjoy spells with Darlington, Slough Town, Gateshead, and Walton & Hersham. It was during his time with Walton & Hersham that Dowson got his first taste of management, becoming the club’s player-manager in 2004.

Three successful years with the Swans were followed by his appointment as manager of Kingstonian, leading the club to a promotion in his second season in charge. In 2014, he was handed the manager role at Hampton & Richmond Borough, helping the Beavers to promotion to the NL South in 2016. In 2018, he took over at Woking and once again enjoyed success, taking Woking to the National League in his first season, following a second placed finish in the NL South.

Both sides will know that a win could help turn their seasons around, with Altrincham wanting back into the play-off picture and Woking hoping to climb further away from the bottom end of the table. Plenty to play for.
