Alty bid to keep giantkilling at Bay!

The FA Cup is upon us again, and while Altrincham have a giantkilling pedigree that’s the envy of non-League football, there is always the danger of the boot being on the other foot at this early stage, with teams from lower down the pyramid eyeing the Robins as a prized scalp. Here, Alty director BILL WATERSON provides a brief analysis of what we can expect on our eagerly-awaited entrance into this season’s competition.

Altrincham have been drawn at home to Northern League side Whitley Bay in the Emirates FA Cup second qualifying round, with the tie to be played at The J. Davidson Stadium on Saturday, September 22nd.

The Robins have never played Whitley Bay before, although we have faced Northern League opposition in the FA Cup at this stage, as recently as 12 months ago at Shildon. Our only home game against a Northern League team was the 3-0 victory over Morpeth two seasons ago.

Whitley Bay defeated Whitby Town, of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, on Saturday to earn this tie, and they have a past to be proud of in cup competitions, having won the FA Vase a record four times. Their longest FA Cup run took them all the way to the third round in 1989-90, where they lost 1-0 to Rochdale, after earlier claiming two Football League scalps, in Scarborough and Preston North End.

The 2nd qualifying round draw includes the following ties involving Vanarama National League North sides:

Chester v City of Liverpool

Ashton United v Trafford

Radcliffe v Curzon Ashton

Staveley Miners Welfare v Guiseley
