City of Liverpool Ladies 0-6 Altrincham FC Ladies

Despite squandering multiple huge chances against City of Liverpool, Altrincham FC Ladies managed to secure a comprehensive 6-0 win on Sunday thanks to a hat-trick from Leigh McFadyen, along with goals from Jess Hartopp, Sophie Carolan and Megan Rowley.

Altrincham started the match well and created some big chances in the opening ten minutes, but some good goalkeeping saw the City of Liverpool deny Megan Rowley, Nikki Carlin and Georgia Ashton.

One of the best chances came on 18 minutes as Carlin brought the ball down before passing it through to Rowley, who fired it towards the top corner but once again the shot was well saved by the City of Liverpool goalkeeper.

Altrincham kept on creating chances but had to wait until the 40th minute for a goal, when Hartopp opened the scoring as she cut in from the right wing and fired towards goal. The otherwise brilliant goalkeeper of City of Liverpool seemed to be in control of the shot, but she fumbled the ball into the net to give Altrincham a one-goal advantage half-time.

The second half started with the hosts putting some pressure on Altrincham through numerous throw-ins and other set-pieces in the first ten minutes. Altrincham defended well however and seemed comfortable in the back.

On 57 minutes, Sophie Carolan received a pass on the halfway line, and beat a defender with a brilliant first touch. She continued running until she was inside the penalty area before seeing her shot parried. Inside the six-yard box, both Imogen Paul and Leigh McFadyen were lurking for the rebound, and it was McFadyen that got to it first to double the lead.

On 75 minutes the match exploded into life and Altrincham really clicked into gear. Carolan showed great technique to play a lovely first-touch through ball to McFadyen who calmly converted to make it 3-0.

Two minutes later, a City of Liverpool defender almost scored an own goal, when the ball hit the post before rolling off the line.

Moments later, Alty added to their lead further as Hartopp played through Carolan one-on-one as she took her time, and cool as you’d like, placed it in the bottom corner with the inside of her boot to make it 4-0.

Megan Rowley got her name on the scoresheet as she scored Altrincham’s fifth on 80 minutes and the visitors were turning on the style at this point. Carolan earned herself another assist when she found Rowley who prompty hammered it into the near corner.

On 82 minutes McFadyen almost completed her hat-trick when her shot from the left-hand side seemed destined for the top corner. The goalie saved brilliantly again as she pushed it away and out for a corner to Altrincham.

However, minutes before full-time, McFadyen was not to be denied and she did complete her hat-trick when a Gail Simpson shot was blocked, and she chested down the ball, before slotting it home to make it six for Altrincham.

Despite being frustrated for long spells, the Lady Robins ran out comfortable winners in the end in what turned out to be a great afternoon for the ladies in red and white.

Altrincham will be looking forward to continue building momentum from the last fifteen minutes into the next game, when they host Curzon Ashton FC Women’s at Mersey Valley this coming Sunday.
