The Emirates F.A. Cup 2nd Round Qualifying Draw was made at 1pm on Monday & Altrincham will travel to Chester on Saturday September 21st.
The Emirates FA Cup Second Qualifying Round draw was made this lunchtime and Altrincham have been handed a testing fixture, away to our local rivals Chester. We have, of course, already visited The Deva Stadium this season, and were unlucky not to come away with the three points after a deflected injury time equaliser gave the home side a share of the spoils after an own goal had given us a first half lead.
Altrincham have come up against a team from our County Town twice over the years in The FA Cup, in 1992 against Football League side Chester City and again in 2015 against the current manifestation of the side Chester FC. On both occasions Alty progressed to the Second Round Proper.
The 1992 tie was memorable for the mighty Clive Freeman strike “that’s what he can do” on a wet night at Moss Lane in our 2-0 win, after a 1-1 draw at The Deva Stadium. Alty came from behind in the original tie, with an Own Goal bringing us level in front of an attendance of 4030. In the replay at Moss Lane Ricky Harris scored the first goal before the Freeman screamer sent 3000 Alty fans into delirium. Our victory earned us a home tie with Port Vale in the Second Round.
In 2015 Chester came to The J Davidson Stadium and a tight game saw Damien Reeves score the only goal of the game in front of 1603, earning us a memorable tie with Barnsley in the first round and a heart breaking trip to Colchester United in the Second Round. My strongest memory of the Chester tie that season was the referee awarding us a penalty in the second half, and then changing his mind.
