Boston United v Altrincham (3rd & 5th on PPG)
Vanarama National League North Promotion Final
Saturday 1st August 2020, 3pm
National League football awaits the victor of Saturday’s Promotion Final when Alty travel to Boston United for the climax of a terrific season.
As I sit here writing this preview in the already 28, soon to be 32 degree heat this Friday, I’m reminded of the scorching conditions our last visit to Boston was played out in.
It may have been early on in the season, but you could still forgive Alty fans for walking out of York Street that day feeling as though the Promotion Final was a distant dream.
But we all know that wasn’t truly Alty that afternoon. The Alty we’ve grown accustomed to under the leadership of Phil Parkinson and Neil Sorvel ... well, that’s the one we watched last weekend.
The upturn in Alty’s performances has been phenomenal. We’ve rolled our sleeves up, doubled down on the excellent brand of football we pride ourselves on, and we’ve reaped the rewards for the hard work and strength of character we have shown throughout the season.
Our confident and assured victory at York City was everything you’d want to see from an away side in a high-stakes, high-pressure game. Solid at the back, careful with the ball and chances taken. With that win, the Robins have officially ‘gone one better’ than the 2018/19 campaign, but you can rest assured that the lads won’t see that as an accolade of any description.
While Alty come into the Final having played two games, Boston have played just the one, owing to their higher-placed finish. They came out on top in a quite enthralling 5-3 encounter with Gateshead, in which The Pilgrims were awarded two controversial penalties.
Ahead of the game, we spoke to Phil Parkinson after training on Thursday night, listen here.
It’s a massive, massive shame that we can’t be there to give them the vocal backing they deserve after a stellar campaign. The travelling support would have had that end behind the goal rocking, no doubt.
Relegation, relegation, title winners, play-off heartache. It’s been quite the journey over the past four seasons. As a club, we stand on the precipice of National League football and a timely return to where we all believe we belong.
Let’s channel the spirit of 2005, and the spirit of 2014, and get the job done on Saturday afternoon.
