Statement from Altrincham FC regarding the 2020/2021 season

Over the last few days, the situation relating to the restart of elite football in front of crowds on 3rd October has deteriorated. The National League, acting in light of the prevailing wisdom at the time, set the start of the season for Saturday 3rd October and confirmed the league would not start with clubs playing behind closed doors.

We now face a decision as to whether we honour the original start date, but playing in empty stadia or we delay the start of the season until fans can once more be admitted to our grounds. Each club will have a different view on the better approach to this issue, and either approach leads to a serious cost impact on all member clubs.

Taking this into account, the preference of Altrincham FC is to start the season behind closed doors with the visit of Weymouth on Saturday October 3rd, followed by our visit to Notts County (a match which will be broadcast live on BT Sport) on Wednesday October 7th

There are two provisos to this preference, and both are needed to make the restart viable.

Join the Patrons Scheme and support the Robins now!

The first is that the current league plans to allow each club to pursue their own live streaming option for home games, as a revenue stream for the home clubs, continues at least until stadia are open to full capacity.

The second is that The National League continue to work with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Football Association to put in place a funding package for all member clubs to address the severe cash shortfall that will be facing all member clubs across the National League and the North and South Divisions.

We have done a lot of work, in the background to put in place a live streaming option for Alty TV, and we hope to be announcing further news on this work in the near future, including plans to live stream Tuesday's friendly against Salford City U23s. We anticipate that our live stream option will be made available free of charge to season ticket holders and as a paid option to all other fans.

We have signed a strong squad for the forthcoming season, and the team has trained hard through the pre-season. As a consequence, we have made the financial commitments associated with starting the season, signing new players and taking existing squad members off furlough and therefore from a playing perspective and from a financial perspective we are ready to go.

Bring on the Alty from October 3rd.
