Altrincham have been drawn away to Southport in the Emirates FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round. We have played Southport twice before in the FA Cup, both at Moss Lane (as The J Davidson Stadium was called then). In 1978 our First Round fixture got off to a bad start as Southport raced into a 2-0 lead. Alty continued to fight and by the 75th minute we went ahead 3-2. Southport equalised from the penalty spot in the 90th minute but we scored a memorable stoppage time goal (when such things were relatively rare) to run out 4-3 winners. We overcame Droylsden in Round 2 and travelled to White Hart Lane in Round 3. Jeff Johnson’s 82nd minute equaliser gave us a memorable 1-1 draw and a replay at Maine Road.
Seventeen years later a 3-2 win at Moss Lane prefaced a win against Wigan Athletic and a return to Spurs.
We have already visited Haig Avenue this season, coming away on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline in the Vanarama National League North. The tie will be played on Saturday 19th October, with £18,750 on offer for the winner and £6250 for the loser.
