Understated but not underrated - quiet man Tom clocks up 200 Alty appearances

He is the ultimate no-frills, no-nonsense centre-half. A proper defender, the sort needed by any team with designs on winning things, and aren't Altrincham glad to have him?

Tom Hannigan had his share of injury setbacks when he first arrived from AFC Fylde, but he soon put those behind him, and how.

A model of durability and dependability under Phil Parkinson and Neil Sorvel, he has been the cornerstone of the Robins' rapid rise from the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, as it was known back then, to the Vanarama National League.

That reliability and level of consistency has always been valued in and around The J.Davidson Stadium, and his contribution to the Alty cause can now be measured in real terms after he brought up his 200th appearance for the club.

The circumstances could have been better - a heavy defeat by Stockport County on Tuesday night - but that shouldn't diminish the worth of a fantastic milestone for a quietly spoken but always dedicated member of the Alty squad.

Well done, Tom - captured above in a memorable picture by Jonathan Moore after Alty's last-gasp equaliser at Chesterfield - and here's to many more appearances in the red and white stripes.
